Celebrating World Photography 2022

To mark World Photography Day Ross Hamilton, co-founder of Formation 3D who photographs many of DB3’s projects, shares his thoughts.

Since the last World Photography Day, I have spent a lot of time travelling around the country (and the world) capturing DB3’s amazing projects as well as my own experiences. I think my photography skills have come a long way since this time last year and like any artist I always try to push my work one step further. I have definitely fine-tuned my eye to see a good photograph before I take it, thinking about the final edit and how it will look next to all my other work.

Since starting out in photography, I have followed numerous photographers like Peter McKinnon, North Borders, Alex Penfold, Luke Stackpoole and Riley Harper. They are a great source of inspiration and have really guided me to find my own style over the years. One of my favourite musicians – John Mayer – once said ‘you find your style when you fail to sound like the person you’re trying to sound like’ and I think this is true across all art forms.

After years of taking photographs I think I can say that I am heading down the path I always wanted to and I can’t wait to see where it will take me! Here is a selection of both work and personal photographs that sit amongst my favourites from this past year – enjoy!

Innerleithen, Scotland

Innerleithen, Scotland

During the past year I have discovered a new passion for mountain biking, the sense of flying through the trees and jumping off rocks and other features is like nothing else I’ve experienced! With all my friends being keen bikers too, we went on an incredible trip up to the Tweed Valley in Scotland and spent the weekend riding some of the most famous trails in the UK. This photo was taken on the famous ‘Golfie’ when we all stopped for a break and to admire the stunning views across Innerleithen.

Sunset on the Mountains, Mallorca

Sunset on the Mountains, Mallorca

I have been holidaying in Mallorca since before I can remember so I class the place as my second home at this point! Whilst visiting with my fiancée last September we were sat relaxing with a bottle of wine when I noticed the sun setting and perfectly highlighting the stunning peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. This has to be one of my favourite photos of the past year as it perfectly captures my favourite place just how I like to remember it.

Helensburgh, Scotland

Helensburgh, Scotland

Last year I was carrying out several drone survey jobs for F3D and was asked to capture some progress images of the new Helensburgh Waterfront Leisure Centre in Scotland. Upon arrival I realised that we couldn’t have picked a better day to take pictures, the sun was glinting off the water and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky! Apart from a few pesky seagulls, this has to be one of the best drone flights I have carried out. This shot shows the stunning development with the Firth of Clyde stretching into the distance.

I always like to take time to look back through my old photos, it really gives me a boost and makes me proud of where I’ve been and how far I’ve come. With the growth and success of Formation 3D, I am finding myself visiting more amazing places with both the camera and drones, capturing everything from beautiful properties to close up inspections of listed buildings. For this World Photography Day, I encourage anyone with a camera (even if it’s just your phone) to get out there and take photographs of the places and things that speak most to them! I will be posting my upcoming adventures on the Formation 3D website – so be sure to check them out.
