DB3 Cardiff Studio celebrates its 1st Year at New Location
We can’t quite believe it has been one year already since our Cardiff team moved to their stunning new studio in central Cardiff – 2 doors down from their previous location!
It comes as no surprise that the office space has been carefully planned out by our team of architects and designers, with areas of working, meeting, collaborating as well as learning and resting all present. The spacious new studio on the 3rd floor also boasts views over Callaghan Square and the city of Cardiff.
Although Covid-19 lockdown has meant that our team could not enjoy studio’s full potential this spring, most have now returned from working from home.
Almost 100 years of architectural achievements in Wales
Almost 100 years of architectural achievements in Wales
DB3’s Welsh origins date back to 1922 when Haydn Burgess opened his Pontypridd office. We can only imagine his pride and amazement if he were to see what transformation to the town our Cardiff team have achieved with the Llys Cadwyn project. Nearing completion this
November, despite severe disruption caused by Covid restrictions, many of the external areas can now be enjoyed by the public. Read more here on our Llys Cadwyn Live Project page.
First Move to Cardiff
First Move to Cardiff
It was Haydn Burgess’ son David that oversaw a move to Cardiff and the expansion into one of Wales’ premier architectural practices, and the rest is off course history! Currently our team working on a £3.5m programme of repairs and alterations to the Grade 1 listed National Museum Cardiff, new business starter units at Robertstown for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the creation of a postgraduate Pharmacy department at Swansea University though the conversion of existing academic space, to name a few.
All seven DB3 studios collaborate closely on key UK wide projects, for example with DB3 London studio our Cardiff team work on office fitout projects such as the current Debt Management Office refurbishment. Also, in particular, our Cardiff team work with colleagues in Aberystwyth on bids, business development and resourcing of work.

Based at our Cardiff studio are eight members of DB3 staff, including senior associates Bruce Massie and Jamie Brewster, who are all led by our regional director, Matthew Savory. Sectors in which our Cardiff team specialise in particular are schools, commercial and industrial buildings, office fitouts, housing, healthcare and the refurbishment of historic and cultural buildings. The use of 3D design software is crucial to our team’s work and they have proven experience in the delivery of large projects such as Llys Cadwyn to BIM level 2.
Clients with whom our Cardiff team work include public bodies such as the National Museum of Wales and the Welsh Government as well as local authorities such as Cardiff, Caerphilly, RCT, Pembrokeshire and Wiltshire Councils. They also carry out work for the Lloyds Baking Group via Wates Smartspace.

Since moving in, two teams of 3 from our Cardiff studio entered for the Wales Property triathlon in October. Despite terrible weather condition they all completed the course and raised money for the Trussell Trust in the process. Architect, Martyn Hurley then completed Red January this year, which consisted of a run every day of the month (a total of over 100 miles) in aid of MIND.
Since then our Cardiff team have all done quite a bit of DIY, but are looking forward to taking part on more community events next year!
Looking forward to the coming years
Looking forward to the coming years
Covid-19 restrictions have meant a quiet year for DB3 socials and local community events, but our Cardiff team are all set on resuming these once possible again. In terms of project work, we don’t want to reveal too much just yet, but here is a small glimpse of what is coming up. Our Cardiff team will be working on various projects at the National Museum Cardiff including a new ramp to the main entrance. Due to start on site in spring 2021 is Pembroke South Quay, which involves the restoration of a group of historic buildings next to Pembroke Castle and the creation of a visitor centre and library.
