Retrofitting for the Future
Retrofitting for the Future
At DB3, we believe in designing for people and our planet. With our focus on retrofit, we specialise in revitalising and enhancing existing structures, minimising waste and maximising resource efficiency. Through the integration of eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and innovative design strategies, DB3 transforms buildings into exemplary showcases of sustainable design.
With two-thirds of today’s buildings expected to remain standing in 2050 and buildings accounting for up to 70% of a city’s carbon emissions, retrofitting presents an exceptional opportunity to improve our cities’ environment. It is an essential step in our journey towards achieving net-zero carbon goals. By collaborating and repurposing existing structures, we can foster innovation and progression, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
RetroFirst
RetroFirst
We have been strong advocates of the AJ’s RetroFirst campaign ever since its establishment in 2019, demonstrating our commitment to championing the reuse of resources in the built environment.
Given the urgency of the climate crisis, we believe that it is crucial for society to prioritise the retention and repurposing of existing structures whenever possible. As architects, we recognise the profound impact that reinventing buildings can have on sustainability and the sense of place.
Our primary objective is always to retain and repurpose, while designing spaces that are flexible, adaptable, and capable of enduring the test of time. We fully support the RetroFirst campaign, which calls for a shift in government policies and approaches. The campaign presents three key demands:
Firstly, tax reform: We advocate for a reduction in VAT on refurbishment, repair, and maintenance from 20% to 5%.
Secondly, policy reform: We urge policymakers to actively promote the reuse of existing building stock and reclaimed construction materials by revising planning guidance and building regulations.
Thirdly, procurement changes: We believe the government should set an example by mandating that all publicly funded projects prioritise retrofit solutions as the first option.
By joining forces with The Architects’ Journal and embracing these demands, we hope to contribute to a more sustainable future, where the reuse of resources becomes the norm in the built environment.
Unleashing the Potential of Existing Buildings

Whether it’s a compact retail space or a historic building requiring preservation, we provide guidance throughout the process. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and design methodologies, DB3 ensures that buildings not only meet contemporary standards but also surpass expectations, providing improved functionality, comfort, and aesthetics.
Future-Proofing the Built Environment
Future-Proofing the Built Environment
As we look to the future, adaptability becomes a crucial aspect of architectural design. DB3’s retrofit service embraces this concept, future-proofing buildings by incorporating flexible design elements and scalable solutions. By considering the evolving needs of occupants and the changing demands of the surrounding environment, DB3 creates spaces that can easily adapt to new technologies, societal trends, and energy requirements. This forward-thinking approach ensures that buildings retain their relevance and value in the face of ever-changing dynamics.
Enhancing User Experience and Wellbeing
Enhancing User Experience and Wellbeing
At DB3, the ultimate goal is to enhance the user experience and promote wellbeing within the built environment. With our retrofit service, we go beyond mere aesthetics and functionality, considering the psychological and physiological aspects of human interaction with spaces. Incorporating elements such as natural light, improved ventilation, acoustics, and biophilic design principles. We craft environments that promote productivity, comfort, and overall wellbeing. By creating spaces that prioritise human needs, we are redefining building design as a catalyst for positive experiences and healthier living.
