Creating a stronger workplace

Aldercastle is located in the heart of the City of London, overlooking the historic London Wall and set within the Foster Lane Conservation Area. Originally built in the late 1990s, the multi-tenanted building required a comprehensive refurbishment to meet modern workplace expectations.

DWS appointed Collins Construction to deliver the £13 million programme, with DB3 acting as delivery Architects and Principal Designer. Working as part of the wider team, our role was to develop the design and guide it through the realities of refurbishment.

Improving the everyday experiences

Improving the everyday experiences

A key part of the project was to give the reception more presence and to create an entrance that feels purposeful. Opening up the frontage allowed the building to meet the street more openly, strengthening its connection to the surrounding context and improving first impressions. At the corner, the massing was increased to refine the building’s form while keeping important sight lines clear to the Grade I listed Church of St Anne and St Agnes. This allowed the entrance to be enlarged and created new outdoor amenity space on the upper levels. The extension was carefully woven into the original façade by continuing the corbel datum line as a new canopy and adopting a consistent material palette throughout.

Inside the double height reception, the design centres on a simple combination of oak, plaster, terrazzo and bronze. The use of natural materials and warm, considered lighting creates a sense of calm, giving the space a welcoming feel without losing its sense of scale. Inside the building, movement between spaces has been improved by simplifying corridors and creating clearer routes through the floor plates. New commuter facilities, including showers, changing areas and secure cycle storage, support more sustainable ways of travelling to work.

The office floors have been reorganised to provide flexible CAT A accommodation, with layouts adjusted to suit different fit out approaches and to make better use of natural light. Outdoor amenity spaces have also been introduced to support wellbeing and offer quieter areas away from the main workspace.
