Barnsley College, in conjunction with the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, joined forces with DB3 to digitally revolutionise the college’s Sci-Tech Centre, converting it into an advanced four-story Digital Innovation Hub. As the project progressed, we integrated five pods to create the Incubator Hub, offering a cost-free space for start-up businesses. This programme aims to bridge the gap between education and employment, by providing students with employer-led and employer-based opportunities.

As the lead architect, we oversaw the transformation and refurbishment of Barnsley College’s existing Sci-Tech Campus building, encompassing an area of 3,723 square meters. This overhaul was geared towards expanding the capacity of the facility to accommodate state-of-the-art learning and teaching spaces.
The newly revamped Sci-Tech Digital Innovation Hub places special emphasis on digital industries, encompassing areas such as cybersecurity, network technologies, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality, in addition to software and programming. Industry-standard, high-spec technology available to students includes powerful PCs, network laboratories, software development studios, immersive rooms, cloud facilities, Microsoft and gaming studios, augmented reality and virtual reality technologies.

In line with our commitment to sustainability and wellbeing, we implemented several innovative design elements into the project.
The design seamlessly combines warm timber elements with industrial accents, creating a welcoming and organic atmosphere that places occupant wellbeing at the forefront. Diverse lighting solutions have been thoughtfully incorporated to cultivate a lively and engaging ambience. Natural passive lighting was harnessed throughout the pods, ensuring energy efficiency. Furthermore, meticulous attention has been given to ergonomics, acoustics, and visual elements to elevate the overall user experience.
