Ipswich Aquatics Centre
Ipswich Borough Council is moving forward with plans to improve the town’s leisure facilities by replacing the existing Crown Pools with a new Aquatics Centre.
The new facility will be built on the Portman Road Car Park site and is designed to meet the needs of a growing population. It will provide modern, accessible spaces for swimming, fitness and community use, while supporting a wide range of aquatic and wellbeing activities.
Sustainability is a key consideration in the design. The building will follow Net Zero principles, include energy efficient features such as triple-glazed windows, and aim for BREEAM certification. The centre will also contribute to wider efforts to encourage physical activity and improve local health and wellbeing.

The Aquatics Centre will include a 25 metre, 10 lane competition pool with a moveable floor, allowing for a variety of swimming activities and events. A 17 metre by 17 metre teaching pool, also with a moveable floor, will support lessons and training sessions. In addition, a 250 square metre leisure water area will incorporate water features such as a slide and activity frame for recreational use.
Spectator facilities will include tiered seating for 300 people, as well as an additional 50 seats at poolside level.
Fitness facilities will feature a 125 station gym, a 12 station health and wellbeing hub, multiple exercise studios including a dedicated spinning studio and a health suite offering a sauna, steam rooms, treatment spaces, and relaxation areas.
