New Concept Store for Morrisons Supermarket in Preston
DB3 acted as Architect for this exciting scheme in Preston to develop a new superstore and petrol filling station for our client Morrisons. Associated car parking, two new accesses, a public amenity space with public art by a local artist, a link to the existing cycle path and future tramway as well as further off-site Section 278 highway improvements we also part of this project.
Background
DB3 are appointed to the framework of Architects to support Morrison’s store development programme and we have been responsible for a variety of store projects including new build, conversion, extension and remodel schemes. We also act as Architect for high volume store change and update programmes, providing additional services as Project Manager. Building Information Modelling is widely implemented, with all new stores designed and delivered in Revit.
The Preston brief
The Preston brief
The design was originally a ‘Store of the Future’, incorporating lean store (value engineering) initiatives, but became a ‘laboratory’ store incorporating a ‘Food Retail Warehouse’ concept. We worked with US/ Canadian consultants using the Preston store as a ‘lab’ to incorporate innovative ideas and new technology such as tunnel scanner checkouts and LCD screen instore promotions.
There is an emphasis on better value via bulk sales at a discount, with full cases of products available to buy whole alongside an amplification of the ‘quality, value and fresh’ ethos synonymous with the client.

The ‘lab store’ driven design was aided in part by DB3’s use of Revit as a design tool. When considering areas of the store it was invaluable to be able to show any part in three dimensions to the client, US consultants and lighting designers. The resulting finish and coordinated design was also assisted by the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to enable all areas of the design to be considered at early stages.
Delivering a Market Street shopping experience
Delivering a Market Street shopping experience
As is familiar in ‘Store of the Future’ sites, customers enter into a wide produce aisle. To the right is a wet produce area (From the Garden). To the left are variations on the traditional Morrison’s ‘Market Street’ of The Oven, Meat Shop and Fish Shop moving around the rear of the store to Bake Shop and Deli & Cheese. In the produce aisle, all cases are low giving a view of the entire area, and bespoke signage and lighting lends the area an American Farmer’s market funkiness.
This slant extends throughout the store, including to The Eatery, a mini version of the traditional Morrison’s café offering real pizzas baked in a wood fired oven, fish and chips and ‘home made’ ice cream. As the seating area is reduced, there is a greater emphasis on take away food. There is also a ‘Grab and Go’ area where customers can buy items such as lunch or fresh flowers, self-scan and go.
The offer of full cases of goods alongside individual items has meant that the majority of stock is held on the shop floor rather than in the warehouse, with palettes of goods on hi-bay racking within the shop floor replenished by forklifts.
Chilled and frozen products on the shop floor are also efficiently replenished from behind with reduced storage requirement in the warehouse and reduced trucking requirement, aiming for 100% availability to the customer.
