Project > Nestlé Project Dove

Transforming UK Coffee Production

Nestlé, a world leader in the food and beverage industry, embarked on an ambitious initiative to revolutionise coffee production in the United Kingdom. Located in Tutbury, Derbyshire, Project Dove represents Nestlé’s most significant construction effort in the UK to date.

As the Architect and Design Team Leader for Project Dove, DB3 played a pivotal role in shaping the brand-new freeze-dried coffee production facility. Utilising our expertise in the industrial field, we crafted the design and played an integral role in the creation of accompanying office spaces and support structures, allowing Nestlé to process 450 tons of coffee beans per week.

Blueprint for Success

Blueprint for Success

Project Dove, which forms the Nestlé ‘Coffee Centre of Excellence,’ houses an impressive array of equipment, including state-of-the-art machinery for every stage of coffee production, from grinding and roasting to extraction. However, the pinnacle of technology lies within the freeze-drying room, where temperatures plummet to a staggering -50°C. Exemplifying how a commitment to technology can create a thriving and world-class production facility.

Collaboration is Key

Collaboration is Key

We collaborated closely with a multi-national team of process engineers right from the project’s inception to create ground-breaking technology and research facilities. This involved seamlessly integrating intricate manufacturing process systems with complex building services and extensive building envelope designs.

As the primary designers, we oversaw the coordination of the design and project team, working in tandem with Nestlé’s in-house engineering team, resulting in the development of a total of 11 distinct buildings. A phasing plan was devised to facilitate the installation of state-of-the-art process equipment tailored for this project.

BIM Integration

BIM Integration

BIM played a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of Nestlé’s project implementation. By integrating 4Projects’ collaborative project planning software, team members and suppliers were seamlessly connected, enabling real-time communication, efficient change and variation tracking, streamlined document handovers, and the establishment of a transparent audit trail.

To achieve these advantages, we crafted 3D BIM models in Revit. These models were subsequently integrated into Navisworks, where they facilitated design review coordination and clash detection. This integrated approach not only promoted better decision-making and collaboration but also contributed significantly to the overall success of the project.

"Today I’m pleased to be opening Nestlé’s new and improved factory following its impressive £325 million investment. This will create 425 new jobs, powering our national economy and supporting the local community.”
