Project > RAF Lossiemouth Single Living Accommodation

Strengthening National Security

RAF Lossiemouth, one of the two RAF Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) stations entrusted with safeguarding the United Kingdom’s airspace, stands as a guardian of our nation’s defence and security.

In an ambitious £250m development initiative, the RAF Lossiemouth Single Living Accommodation (SLA) Project has emerged as a beacon of progress, enhancing the capabilities of this essential RAF base. To navigate the unique challenges of its remote location and maintain operational readiness, the project embraced modular construction methods.

The accommodation comprises:

  • Five Junior Ranks Single Living Accommodation (SLA) Blocks
  • One Junior Officers SLA Block
  • One Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCO) SLA Block

In total, there are 426 modern en-suite bedrooms, along with well-equipped kitchen facilities, communal spaces, utility rooms, and various other associated support facilities.

Harnessing the Power of Technology

Harnessing the Power of Technology

Innovation played a central role throughout this project, particularly with the strategic use of technology, notably Revit and Revizto.

Revit’s advanced 3D modeling capabilities proved indispensable in swiftly identifying and addressing design clashes and structural concerns. Simultaneously, Revizto facilitated real-time collaboration, fostering efficient communication among team members.

In the context of modular construction, where seamless integration of off-site fabrication and on-site assembly is paramount, the precision-driven application of technology proved instrumental.

Utilising MMC

Utilising MMC

Modular construction offers many benefits to a client. For the RAF Lossiemouth SLA, it enhanced security by enabling components to be prefabricated off-site under strict protocols, thereby reducing the risks of unauthorised access. This method also minimised disruptions to RAF Lossiemouth’s essential operations, ensuring that operational readiness remains intact during construction. Furthermore, the speed of modular construction played a vital role in meeting the ambitious development deadline, swiftly providing modern living accommodations for RAF personnel.

Overcoming Barriers

Overcoming Barriers

When the previous modular contractor, Caledonian Modular, went into administration, it posed a significant hurdle for the project. However, our commitment and expertise came to the forefront as the project efficiently transitioned to a new contract.

As a result, we went on to serve as the technical support for both the main contractor, Robertsons, and the new modular contractor, JRL Modular. Our role ensured continuity and minimised disruptions, allowing the development to proceed smoothly. Our dedication and seamless management during this challenging period were instrumental in the project’s success.

"The opening of Inverness House is a huge step forward for our people, as we continue to improve the standard of accommodation for everyone that lives on base. Today’s achievement is a real Team Lossie story and the culmination of years of hard work by many people.”
