The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project is a ground breaking renewable energy initiative that will connect Morocco’s abundant solar and wind energy directly to the UK’s power grid. This first-of-its-kind project aims to generate 11.5GW of zero-carbon electricity, delivering 3.6GW of reliable, low-cost, clean power for an average of 19+ hours a day. That’s enough to supply over 7 million British homes and meet 8% of the UK’s electricity needs.

Located in Guelmim Oued Noun, a region renowned for its renewable energy potential, the facility will harness Morocco’s solar and wind energy resources. Once complete, the project will become one of the most significant contributors to the UK’s transition to sustainable energy. By using advanced battery storage technology, the facility will ensure a near-constant supply of clean energy, supporting the UK’s energy demands with consistency and reliability.

We are providing architectural and principal designer services for the 3.6GW converter station in Devon, a critical component of the UK’s energy infrastructure. This station will convert the imported electricity from HVDC to HVAC before integrating it into the British transmission network.

Our approach prioritises sustainability, ensuring that every aspect of the design is considerate of the natural landscape and character of the Devon countryside. Our architectural approach integrates the facility into its surroundings, aiming for minimal visual and ecological impact. From the layout of the control access building to the broader architectural landscape, we’ve worked to ensure the facility harmonises with its environment.

Shaping the Future of Energy Infrastructure

The Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project will bring clean energy from Morocco to the UK through a process that begins with renewable energy generation. Solar panels and wind turbines, strategically located in the Guelmim Oued Noun region, will produce 11.5GW of energy. To ensure a steady and continuous flow of power, an on-site 22.5GWh/5GW battery facility will store energy, providing backup when natural energy production dips.

This power is then transmitted via four subsea HVDC cables, each stretching 4,000km through shallow waters from Morocco to Great Britain. The cables follow a route that passes through Morocco, Spain, Portugal, and France before reaching the UK. On arrival, the power is converted at two 1.8GW voltage source converter stations in Devon, designed to transform the HVDC power into alternating current (AC) for distribution through the UK’s national grid.
